What is fonio?

Fonio — acha in Hausa — is one of West Africa's oldest cultivated grains. It has been grown and eaten across the region for generations: cooked quickly, served simply, and treated as an everyday food rather than a speciality one.

The grain is small and pale, and it cooks light and separate. It works as a base, a side, a salad or a breakfast bowl.

It has never needed reinventing. What it needed was to be processed properly, packaged well, and made available where people actually shop.

Story/ 04

MADE ONPURPOSE.

We started with an ordinary observation: a good, well-understood grain was hard to buy in a form that suited a modern kitchen and a modern shelf.

So the work was not invention. It was processing, packaging, naming and distribution — the unglamorous parts that decide whether a product ends up in someone's cupboard.

Acha is the first product Vonara Agriculture has taken through that whole route, from opportunity to shelf.

Packaging/ 05

BUILT FORTHE SHELF.

Packaging is a product decision, not a finishing layer. It has to survive distribution, hold its own on shelf and still feel like something worth picking up.
